The University of Galway's Structured PhD in Latin American Studies provides a distinctive academic setting focused on Latin America, with specialized knowledge in Southern Cone, Central American, and Mexican literature and culture. Presently, five faculty members within the Spanish department conduct active research in this field.
This interdisciplinary PhD program appeals both to aspiring academics and those pursuing careers in Development or NGOs across the Americas. Doctoral candidates are currently exploring literary studies, gender studies, film, detective fiction, and cultural studies within Mexican, Chilean, Argentine, and Cuban frameworks. Participants typically gain research experience in various Latin American nations during their studies. A standout feature is the diverse selection of cross-disciplinary courses that enhance students' learning and encourage innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to their research.
The Structured PhD includes comprehensive doctoral training through interdisciplinary coursework. Available modules cover:
specialized disciplinary content to deepen expertise, such as Latin American Literature I and II
research-focused skills crucial for dissertation completion, like additional language acquisition
professional development opportunities, including presenting at international conferences
career-enhancing generic training, such as workshops and IT skills development.
Students receive guidance from primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars who assist in designing their academic path and supporting their research journey.
Candidates should possess an honours degree in Spanish (Second Class, Grade 1 minimum [or equivalent international qualification]) and, in the case of the PhD, should normally hold an MA in a relevant area.
