The Structured PhD in Celtic Studies offers a four-year full-time or six-year part-time program combining coursework and research. Candidates should possess an excellent honors degree or demonstrate equivalent qualifications approved by the Head of Discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies.
As part of the doctoral training within this structured program, participants can select from various interdisciplinary courses. These offerings include:
specialized modules to deepen expertise in specific fields (such as Celtic, Classical, or Modern European languages and literatures),
research-focused modules providing essential skills for dissertation completion (including academic writing),
professional development opportunities (like presenting at international conferences),
career-enhancing general training (such as digital skills development).
Each student receives guidance from a primary Supervisor or Co-Supervisors, along with a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned academics, to design their study plan and provide continuous research support.
Alumni have achieved notable success across diverse fields including education, academic research, publishing, broadcast media, journalism, and cultural heritage management.
Candidates must have a high honours standard in a primary degree in Irish, Welsh, Celtic Studies, Classics, Medieval Studies, or similar, or present such other evidence of suitability as will satisfy the Head of Discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies. Many successful applicants will already hold a Master's degree also.
Admission to the PhD is at the discretion of the potential supervisor and the Head of Discipline. Initial enquiries should be made to the Head of Discipline.
