The Structured PhD in Archaeology is a full-time, four-year program combining coursework and research. Candidates need an excellent undergraduate record or must demonstrate equivalent qualifications approved by the Head of discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies.
As part of the Structured PhD's training framework, students participate in interdisciplinary courses. The diverse selection of modules includes options that:
strengthen discipline-specific expertise, such as Adobe Photoshop Fundamentals, Digital Surveying Basics, and specialized archaeological topics.
provide essential research skills directly supporting dissertation work.
support professional growth, including presenting at international conferences and mastering core surveying techniques.
improve career prospects through transferable skills development.
Every doctoral candidate receives guidance from a primary Supervisor(s) and a Graduate Research Committee composed of seasoned scholars who design the study plan and offer continuous research support.
Applicants for the PhD must have a high honours standard in their primary degree or present such other evidence of fitness which will satisfy the Head of Discipline and the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
