Physics research at the School is structured around three key groups: the Centre for Photonics and Imaging, the Atmospheric and Environmental Research Cluster, and the Centre for Astronomy.
Our optical and imaging research focuses on applied optics, laser microfabrication, tissue optics, microcirculation imaging, and medical imaging & modeling.
We study aerosols and gases in coastal environments, examining their physical/chemical properties and impact on climate change.
Established in 2022, the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences conducts pioneering research and offers programs aligned with contemporary biological and chemical sciences. Our work centers on two main themes: Sustainable World and Health & Discovery, addressing future environmental and societal needs.
We provide diverse programs at all academic levels, from undergraduate to postdoctoral. Undergraduate options include Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Agriculture/Bioeconomy, while postgraduate offerings feature Climate Change, Food Sustainability, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, and Medical Technology. Our curriculum integrates sustainability principles from the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, employs innovative teaching approaches, and leverages the University of Galway's broad scientific expertise.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible to enter on a programme of research for the degree of MSc you must have reached a high honours standard (minimum H2.2 or equivalent international qualification) at the examination for the primary degree or presented such evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of your fitness.

English Language Requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall, no less than 5.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (7 Listening, 16 Speaking, 18 Writing, 8 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 48 in any one component.
