This nine-month Master's program builds directly upon the four-year undergraduate BE in Mechanical Engineering, offering students an initial foray into advanced engineering education and research while meeting the academic and professional criteria for Chartered Engineer certification. The program's core objective is to equip graduates for dynamic careers in cutting-edge engineering, technological innovation, and management.
The University of Galway's Master of Engineering (ME) forms part of an integrated 41 (Bachelors-Masters) curriculum aligned with European engineering accreditation standards. Completing this Level 9 ME program within the accredited structure enables graduates to fulfill the educational prerequisites for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status immediately after graduation.
Standing alone, the ME program constitutes a 60 ECTS, nine-month academic course. Holders of honors degrees in related Engineering fields may qualify for admission, particularly those seeking deeper specialization in their core engineering area. Prospective students aiming to use the ME for CEng accreditation should note that professional certification evaluates combined undergraduate (Level 8) and graduate (Level 9) study periods, not the Master's program in isolation. Applicants must verify their bachelor's degree meets the necessary standards.
Career Prospects
Opportunities span mechanical engineering sectors (including power generation, renewables, manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, and offshore industries), biomedical engineering, engineering management, advanced research (such as PhD studies), engineering software development, and consultancy services.
Individuals must have a minimum Second Class Honours, Grade 2 (H2.2), in a Level 8 engineering degree in a related discipline, or equivalent, from a recognised university or third-level college. Factors taken into account in determining admission will include the specific content of the undergraduate degree, the applicant’s performance, and the availability of places.
