This four-year degree program, delivered in collaboration with the Health Service Executive West, culminates in a Bachelor of Nursing Science (Mental Health Nursing) qualification and meets the requirements for registration in the Psychiatric Division of the Nurses Register, overseen by Ireland's Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the official regulatory authority for nursing professionals. The BSc. (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing equips students with the expertise, competencies, professional values, and conduct needed to deliver exceptional care and skilled nursing practice within today's dynamic healthcare landscape. Mental Health Nursing focuses on supporting individuals through mental health challenges while fostering overall psychological wellness. Central to this field is building therapeutic connections with patients, their support networks, and family members.
Career Pathways
Those completing the Mental Health Nursing program can pursue diverse roles across multiple environments, such as:
Hospital-based psychiatric units, Community mental health programs, Youth mental health services
Forensic psychiatric facilities, Non-profit organizations, Recovery and reintegration programs, Geriatric mental health services
Addiction treatment centers, General mental health care provision
Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 level in the Leaving
Certificate, including Irish, English, Mathematics, a laboratory science subject (i.e., Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics with Chemistry (joint) or Agricultural Science), and any two other subjects recognised for entry purposes.
Additional Requirements
Health requirements: Nursing and midwifery are demanding professions, both physically and emotionally. This requires good mental and physical health and the ability to achieve the required competencies of a nurse/midwife. Students will be required to complete a Medical Assessment Self Declaration Form and undergo a medical assessment/screening and a vaccination programme, etc. as determined by an EB/healthcare agency. Students must satisfactorily complete these or other health requirements to commence/continue with the programme.
English Language Requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall no less than 6.5 in any one component; Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE): 176 overall; Cambridge C2 Advanced (CPE): 180 overall; TOEFL: 88 overall (20 Listening, 20 Speaking, 24 Writing, 19 Reading); Pearson PTE: 61 overall, no less than 61 in any one component.
