This program equips students with insights into how media intersects with warfare, international conflicts, and security issues. The curriculum adopts a multidisciplinary perspective, examining both cultural and political aspects of media coverage in global conflicts. Key areas of study include: public diplomacy and soft power strategies, the impact of digital media on conflict perception, the creation and dissemination of war imagery, and how news reporting influences government decisions and NGO operations.
The course explores the media's multifaceted role in shaping narratives around conflicts, while investigating the dynamic between media outlets, governments, military institutions, and NGOs in framing international disputes.
As Ireland's sole graduate program—and among the few globally—that merges media studies with international relations, it offers a unique and rigorous academic experience.
Participants will engage with modules such as: US Foreign Policy and Media, Digital Media in Modern Conflicts, Public Diplomacy, and Contemporary Challenges in US Foreign Policy. Additionally, students will complete a 12,000-15,000 word thesis.
Both full-time and part-time study options are available.
