It brings together an interdisciplinary team of scholars, researchers, and students concentrating on current development topics.

This 3-4 year full-time 'sandwich' PhD program is jointly provided by UCD and partner institutions in Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and China (including the University of Dar Es Salaam, University of Malawi, University of Zimbabwe, and Xiamen University), or other developing country universities willing to host students for their mandatory research period. The program primarily targets government officials and public sector employees (such as university academics and research institute staff) across East Africa.

Participants must complete at least one semester each academic year at UCD, with the subsequent semester spent at their designated research university under the guidance of a local supervisor.
