The Master of Science in Government and Politics is a dynamic interdisciplinary program designed to equip graduates with specialized knowledge and practical experience for careers in public policy. This MSc program centers on governance, exploring how government influences every aspect of our lives - from food regulations and healthcare systems to taxation policies. Governance operates across multiple levels today: local, regional, national, European, and international.
The curriculum offers insights into modern governance by analyzing key topics like evolving democratic theories, regulatory changes, and global relations. Students engage with current policy discussions at various governance levels, studying political reforms in Ireland, evolving European governance structures, and 21st-century challenges to democracy and human rights protection.
What sets our MSc apart is its strong vocational focus, combining academic coursework with the choice between a practical work placement dissertation or traditional research project. A dedicated placement coordinator secures tailored internships aligned with each student's interests, with most positions being paid (though not guaranteed). This successful internship model builds on our department's pioneering work in political science placements at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students gain experience in diverse policy organizations including the Irish and Scottish parliaments, the President's Office, Central Bank, and Ervia, applying program knowledge while developing professional competencies. The program enhances research and analytical capabilities in government, political science, and public policy while cultivating transferable skills in data analysis, research methods, policy evaluation, critical thinking, and effective communication. The work placement component provides unparalleled opportunities to develop professional expertise and immediately implement academic learning in real-world settings.
