The M.Phil. in Middle East in a Global Context is a digital program focused on exploring the Middle East's diverse histories, cultures, political landscapes, and languages.
This program develops cultural competence and analytical skills regarding Middle Eastern and North African societies, while investigating minority communities and identities within the region. It also examines Islamic traditions and their cultural expressions worldwide.
Students will analyze the broader socio-economic-cultural environment of the Middle East, considering both contemporary developments and future trajectories.
The curriculum covers Middle Eastern history from ancient times to modernity, including Arab intellectual traditions and the impact of Western involvement since the 19th century.
Participants will investigate pressing regional challenges, contextualize current Middle Eastern and North African affairs historically, and critically assess Western portrayals of the area.
No prior knowledge of the area is required, and Arabic can be studied ab initio. Applicants should normally have a second class (2.1) honours Bachelor degree or equivalent.
