The Department of Clinical Speech and Language Studies at the School holds the distinction of being Ireland's oldest institution for training speech and language therapists. Its core research focuses on communication in both typical and atypical situations, highlighting the social impact of communication challenges and swallowing disorders (dysphagia). For postgraduate students, the department provides diverse research pathways culminating in advanced degrees (M.Sc., M.Litt., Ph.D.), while promoting cross-disciplinary research methods. Applicants may undergo interviews to evaluate their graduate study potential and ensure proper supervision alignment. Faculty research specialties encompass: acquired communication impairments, swallowing disorders, alternative communication methods, childhood speech/language disorders, conversation analysis, fluency challenges, gender considerations, identity and disability studies, psychiatric language patterns, developmental processes across life stages, program assessment, voice studies, and literacy development difficulties. Additionally, the School provides specialized postgraduate programs in speech-language pathology, with clinical concentrations in swallowing disorders, acquired communication impairments, alternative communication systems, and developmental speech/language conditions.
Postgraduate work in Trinity College Dublin is very academically challenging and as a result the University has high academic entry requirements. Applicants will need to hold at least a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent result from a university in another country; a fluent command of the English language. Display a high level of competence in the English language in one of the examination systems recognised by Trinity College Dublin.
