Trinity's Centre for Deaf Studies enables students to gain deep understanding and respect for Deaf culture, achievements, and current challenges facing Deaf communities both in Ireland and globally. This unique undergraduate program stands as Ireland's sole offering of its kind. Irish Sign Language (ISL), the native language of Ireland's Deaf community, serves as the primary communication method at the Centre. Just as numerous spoken languages exist worldwide, so too do diverse sign languages.
Recognized as Ireland's third official language through the 2017 Irish Sign Language Act, ISL also holds recognition among European institutions and shares official status with British Sign Language in Northern Ireland. Over four years, students achieve proficiency in ISL and can specialize in ISL/English interpretation, ISL teaching, or Deaf Studies. Those pursuing Deaf Studies examine educational, social, cultural, linguistic, and psychological matters as they relate to Deaf individuals, communities, and their status as a linguistic and cultural minority group.
A distinguished academic team, including many Deaf scholars, guides this multidisciplinary program. The degree equips students for rewarding careers such as disability officers, resource coordinators, research assistants, or administrators within Deaf organizations, among other possibilities. Many graduates leverage this foundation to pursue advanced postgraduate studies.
Applicants must have completed a high school qualification equivalent to the Irish Leaving Certificate. General matriculation requirements include pass grades in English, mathematics and a language other than English. Additional requirements may apply for some courses.
