Early childhood education and care (ECEC) takes a comprehensive approach to nurturing young children from birth to age 6, encompassing both educational aspects (like early stimulation, learning activities, and developmental exercises) and care components (including health, nutrition, safety, hygiene, and attentive caregiving). This program prepares graduates with fundamental knowledge, practical skills, and professional values to excel as early childhood educators. With its hands-on focus, the course cultivates reflective practitioners who can integrate ECEC principles effectively. Participants will develop competencies in play-based learning, creative development through arts and music, child psychology, sociology, and social policy. Practical experience is emphasized through supervised placements during years 2 and 3, allowing students to implement classroom theories in real-world early childhood settings.
Career prospects for graduates include roles as early childhood educators, preschool managers in private or community organizations, positions with Barnardos Early Years Services, childcare committee development officers, early intervention specialists, and inspector roles with TUSLA and the Department of Education and Skills.
