The field of Medical Devices covers all healthcare products (excluding pharmaceuticals) utilized for diagnosing, preventing, tracking, or managing diseases and disabilities. Common examples are contact lenses, joint replacements, smart pacemakers, vascular stents, breathing apparatus, and laser-based surgical tools. Ireland's medtech sector is evolving from a manufacturing-focused industry to one characterized by sophisticated, high-value innovation powered by research and development. This transformation requires close cooperation among diverse stakeholders such as academic researchers, healthcare professionals, manufacturers, and regulatory bodies.
This program equips students with comprehensive expertise and practical abilities for careers in the medical device field. Graduates can pursue roles in product design, production, technical assistance, client relations, and various value-added services within the industry. Developed through industry consultation, the curriculum responds to key findings in Forf√°s' 2008 analysis of skill requirements for Ireland's medical device sector. It specifically targets the enhancement of qualifications for scientific, engineering, and technical professionals while supporting ongoing career advancement in this dynamic industry.
Minimum NFQ Level 7 Degree in an Engineering or cognate Scientific discipline or equivalent. Candidates without relevant CAD background may, as a condition of entry, be required to undertake a support CAD module.
