Marine engineers are responsible for running and servicing ship engines, boilers, power generators, and various onboard systems. The majority of mechanical ship equipment falls under their operational and maintenance duties. This program delivers thorough foundational knowledge in marine engineering principles.
Beyond classroom instruction, students receive hands-on training in marine, electrical, welding, and mechanical workshops. This is enhanced with practical sessions in the College's engine room and simulation exercises using specialized machinery and cargo handling simulators.
After successfully finishing years 1 and 2, students typically undertake placements on commercial vessels to acquire practical experience and accumulate the required sea time for the Department of Transport's Certificate of Competency during their third year. During this maritime phase, participants must also fulfill an extensive onboard training curriculum, maintaining detailed logs, journals, and all other documentation as periodically required by the training program.
