Primary teaching offers two main pathways: the undergraduate Bachelor of Education (B Ed) program and the two-year postgraduate Professional Master of Education (PMEd). Both the B Ed and PMEd prepare students for careers as primary school teachers in Ireland, with potential opportunities to teach internationally.
The Froebel-inspired Department emphasizes child-focused, interactive teaching methods throughout its programs.
Core theoretical studies include Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, and the History of Education.
The four-year curriculum combines educational coursework with practical teaching placements in diverse settings, including mandatory Gaeltacht residencies during Easter of the second and third years (two two-week periods).
Upon completion, graduates meet the Teaching Council's registration requirements and are certified to teach in Irish primary schools.
