This program explores both theoretical and practical aspects of communication and culture. A collaborative initiative between York and Ryerson, it leverages the combined facilities and resources of both institutions. As the only program of its kind in Ontario, it blends academic study with professional training. Students will analyze the social, political, and economic aspects of key topics including globalization, deregulation, privacy concerns, security issues, media industry convergence, intercultural communication, and digital media.

Key research areas encompass: theories of communication and culture; cultural policy and legal frameworks; historical perspectives on media and culture; telecommunications policies and strategies; media political economy; technology critique; and global studies.

Students gain practical insights from faculty members at both universities who bring professional expertise in communications, social sciences, humanities, media studies, and fine arts.
