This program explores both theoretical and practical aspects of communication and culture. A collaborative initiative between York and Ryerson universities, it leverages the combined facilities and resources of both institutions. As the only program of its kind in Ontario, it blends academic study with professional training. Students will analyze the social, political, and economic aspects of contemporary issues including globalization, deregulation, privacy concerns, media industry convergence, intercultural communication, and digital media.
Key research areas encompass: theories of communication and culture; cultural law and policy; historical studies of media and culture; telecommunications strategy; media economics; technology critique; and global studies. Students gain from the practical expertise of faculty members from diverse backgrounds in communications, social sciences, humanities, media, and fine arts.
