German serves as an essential resource for scholarly research across various humanities and social science disciplines. As one of the European Union's primary languages for commerce, international relations, and travel, it boasts more than 100 million speakers. At York University, undergraduates can obtain a Certificate of Proficiency in German Language while completing their bachelor's degree requirements. The program also welcomes applicants holding an accredited bachelor's degree who meet Faculty and University admission criteria. This certification is available to students enrolled in German studies with a culture and society focus, though it excludes those pursuing or possessing a degree in German Language, Literature and Culture.
Administered by the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, the Certificate of Proficiency in German Language recognizes individuals with advanced understanding of German grammar and syntax, enabling effective communication in both formal and casual settings. Successful candidates exhibit spoken fluency and demonstrate mastery of complex grammatical structures and stylistic elements in written and reading comprehension of the language.
