Global Health explores ways to enhance wellbeing and ensure fair access to healthcare across the world. This discipline examines cross-border health challenges and the systems influencing our ability to maintain good health, both locally and internationally. Through its interdisciplinary approach encompassing healthcare, public health, social factors affecting health, and environmental health, students develop comprehensive strategies to tackle health complexities. This makes Global Health an excellent choice for those pursuing careers in medical or public health fields. Recognized as Canada's pioneering undergraduate global health program, Maclean's magazine highlighted it as one of York University's most distinguished offerings.
The Specialized Honours options integrate essential coursework that all students complete, blending scientific, social science, and humanities perspectives on global health. Curriculum includes human biology (such as anatomy and physiology), disease studies (covering both infectious and chronic conditions), public health topics (like epidemiology and health advocacy), research methods (including global health studies, program assessment, and healthcare strategy), health policy (examining social health factors, health politics, and international health governance), along with ethics and legal considerations (such as global health ethics and human rights legislation).
Beyond these fundamental courses, Specialized Honours students complete at least 21 credits in electives from four specialized tracks tailored to professional aspirations: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Worldwide, International Health Policy and Systems Management, Environmental Health on a Global Scale, and Digital Health Solutions Globally. During their final semester, students undertake a 250-hour hands-on Global Health Practicum, gaining real-world experience with academic institutions, government bodies, or NGOs either in Canada or abroad. This practical component is complemented by a concentrated two-week research capstone course.
