The four-year PhD in Geography is offered through the Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography, a partnership that creates Canada's third-largest graduate geography program. This collaborative initiative is strengthened by multiple research centers such as the Laurier Institute for Water Science, Cold Regions Research Centre, and International Migration Research Centre.

Our geography PhD program aims to deliver comprehensive theoretical and practical geographical knowledge through coursework, teaching opportunities via assistantships, and research development through independent projects. Graduates emerge with the independent capability to teach, undertake research, and produce academic publications.

A master's degree in geography, or a related field, with a minimum A- standing.
Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests and letters of reference.
Exceptional students may obtain early entry to our PhD program from our master's program.
TOEFL iBT/TOEFL iBT Home Edition: minimum score of 83, with minimum skill scores of 20 in each of the skills tests (speaking, writing, reading and listening).
Paper-based TOEFL: minimum of 560.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS, IELTS Online): academic minimum score of 6.5 with no band score below 6.0.
