The Biology Department's curriculum showcases modern biology's vast scope through over seventy diverse courses. These range from hands-on lab-intensive programs beginning in sophomore year to intimate senior seminars focused on honing communication abilities. Learners can specialize in specific fields like genetics or animal behavior, or opt for a comprehensive education covering multiple biological disciplines.
The program prioritizes cultivating analytical reasoning, communication proficiency, experimental methodology mastery, and robust data interpretation capabilities. Concentration areas may develop specialized competencies such as ecosystem evaluation, species identification, molecular biology techniques, microscopy applications, and analytical equipment operation.
Current research suggests approximately 9 million species inhabit our planet, with scientists believing more than 80% remain undocumented. This era demands enhanced scientific comprehension of worldwide biodiversity, its endangerments, and conservation strategy development. Tackling these challenges necessitates expertise in systematics, genetics, ecology, and field biology - foundational knowledge that supports advanced conservation and restoration coursework and practical applications.
