The Department of Classical Studies explores all facets of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Our curriculum covers archaeology, art history, classical languages, literary works, mythology, philosophical thought, and religious practices. Western University boasts experts in diverse areas including Greek dramatic arts, ancient sports culture, medieval Latin texts, and Roman fashion, though all faculty members are passionate about discussing any element of Greco-Roman antiquity.
Throughout most of the 1900s, what was then called the Classics Department concentrated primarily on analyzing Greek and Latin texts in their original languages, offering only a single English-language course. The department underwent a significant transformation in 1970, adopting its current name and expanding its scope beyond linguistic studies to embrace a more holistic approach to classical civilizations, introducing numerous English-taught courses. This strategic shift positioned Western as a pioneer in reshaping Classical Studies education throughout North America and globally.
