Economics explores how societies manage limited resources through decision-making by individuals, institutions, and governments. At its core, this field examines how scarce resources are distributed among competing needs—a fundamental concept that drives economic analysis across diverse social issues. Our department includes experts in traditional economic areas like international trade, employment, taxation, and income distribution, alongside scholars tackling unconventional topics. Current research spans criminal behavior (Lochner), educational systems (Caucutt, Stinebrickner), household conflicts (Bowlus), China's economic development (Sicular), healthcare economics (McGee), and environmental policy (Tarquinio), among others.

The Honors Specialization in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics offers a rigorous, selective curriculum designed to equip students for advanced studies and leadership positions in law, public policy, international affairs, business, and economics. This program will supersede our current Honors Specialization in Economics, Politics & Philosophy.
