This program positions graduates at the crossroads of two dynamic, rapidly expanding fields with worldwide importance: leisure studies and sustainable development. The curriculum equips future leaders with the tools to analyze and develop approaches that allow both local communities and visitors to sustainably enjoy recreational activities, natural landscapes, cultural attractions, heritage sites, and adventure opportunities as part of their life experiences. Learning occurs through an innovative international format combining fieldwork, classroom teaching, and hands-on learning methods. The program features two interconnected educational components: 1) foundational concepts and applications in leisure and sustainability; and 2) comprehensive research skills, innovative thinking, and knowledge translation techniques essential for converting academic insights into real-world solutions.

Qualification Requirements

An undergraduate degree from an appropriately accredited university.
A minimum average of B calculated in the last two years of the undergraduate degree, with a review of the entire degree.
Applicants whose previous degree was obtained in a country where English is not the primary/official language and from a university where English was not the language of instruction must meet one of VIU's English Language requirements for Graduate Programs.
