This one-year Certificate in Adventure Tourism and Recreation prepares students for entry-level assistant guide positions in the adventure tourism sector.
The program offers comprehensive training in adventure tourism fundamentals and assistant guide competencies, with focused instruction on sea kayak expeditions as well as coastal and cultural interpretation.
Students explore the historical and philosophical foundations of leisure, recreation, and adventure tourism while analyzing how natural resources contribute to sustainable tourism development. The curriculum covers essential leadership skills for coastal eco-tourism, environmental program design, and cultural interpretation methods. Practical field training and internships equip students with assistant-level guiding expertise for both marine and terrestrial environments.
Hands-on field experience constitutes about half of the program. The 30-credit curriculum divides equally between on-campus academic coursework (15 credits) and off-campus training, including a 4-week intensive field skills program and an industry internship in adventure tourism operations.
