Politics involves a society's collective discussions on core issues like justice, freedom, human rights, democracy, legislation, conflict resolution, governance, and civic participation. Political Studies explores pivotal inquiries such as: How are resources and power distributed? What limits exist on individual or institutional authority? What purposes do political decisions or inaction serve? Examining these questions equips Political Studies students with insights into both national and global political challenges and potential solutions.

Canada's political landscape is growing increasingly diverse and interconnected with global affairs, yet enduring political questions remain relevant. Understanding future possibilities requires knowledge of political philosophy's historical development. Those prepared to navigate Canada's evolving society and global changes will find expanding opportunities. Political Studies empowers students by developing their analytical skills for real-world problem-solving, research capabilities, and civic awareness.

Graduates can pursue fulfilling careers in various sectors including government service (municipal, provincial, or federal); international relations; NGOs; education; media; social research; or consulting. VIU's Political Studies BA program provides foundation for advanced degrees in Political Science, International Studies, Public Administration, Business, interdisciplinary fields, or Law.

VIU's undergraduate program offers Political Studies as either a Major or Minor within a 4-year BA degree. The curriculum focuses on four key areas: international relations, comparative politics, political philosophy, and Canadian politics. Students first explore foundational courses before specializing in upper-level electives.

VIU's Political Studies program also allows students to enhance their degree through interdisciplinary coursework. This approach deepens political understanding while offering options to combine with a Minor or joint Major in complementary fields.
