The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History guides students through time, exploring specialized subjects ranging from broad themes like politics, conflict, and social change to focused topics such as European cinema and hockey's role in Canadian identity.
Whether pursuing a history major or minor within your BA, you'll develop historical perspective applicable to any profession. History students hone essential abilities like critical analysis, problem-solving, and data interpretation - skills highly sought after across all careers and advanced studies. Graduates have succeeded in diverse fields including education, legal professions, cultural preservation, media, business, government, and entertainment industries.
The History Honours (BA) Program
The Honours History track enables students to deepen their historical expertise through two advanced courses. History 490 (Honours Historiography and Research Methods) explores various theoretical frameworks and investigative techniques used by historians throughout time. Students engage with seminal historical texts to prepare for History 491 (Honours Thesis), where they conduct graduate-level research under faculty guidance, producing work that meets Master's program expectations. Honours graduates leave VIU equipped with sophisticated analytical skills and specialized knowledge ideal for postgraduate studies or professional historical work.
