VIU's Anthropology degree program offers valuable insights into human nature. This program explores our origins and identity, deepening our comprehension of humanity itself.
The Bachelor of Anthropology at VIU equips graduates with diverse skills applicable to various fields including law, government, business, education, healthcare, market research, and beyond. Anthropology studies also foster global citizenship, with the department providing field schools and both local and international internships to enhance classroom education. The program examines human nature through a comprehensive approach, investigating multiple dimensions of human existence. Using perspectives from Sociocultural, Biological, Archaeological, and Linguistic Anthropology, students explore humanity's biological and cultural diversity. VIU's program emphasizes applying anthropological theories and methods to topics including race relations, social justice, cultural awareness, archaeology, museum curation, resource management, human rights advocacy, human evolution, and cultural-environmental interactions.
The Anthropology Department provides undergraduate courses at three levels: introductory (100-level), second-year (200-level), and advanced (300-400-level). Advanced courses are open to both third- and fourth-year students, with prerequisites determining eligibility rather than strict year-level requirements. High-achieving students can pursue an Anthropology Honours Degree through the department.
ANTH 212 typically serves as the gateway to upper-level Social Anthropology courses, while ANTH 213 is required for advanced Archaeology studies. For Biological Anthropology upper-level courses, ANTH 214 is the standard prerequisite.
