East Asia stands as one of the world's most vibrant and culturally profound regions. Its economic growth has significantly influenced global trends in recent years, with the area playing a pivotal role in international matters. The historical heritage of East Asia, including its spiritual traditions, societal norms, and literary works, continues to shape regional dynamics and will undoubtedly influence our collective future.
The EALC program focuses on exploring East Asian civilizations. It offers students two core elements: 1) language acquisition (covering Modern Mandarin, Classical Chinese, and Japanese) and 2) a cross-disciplinary examination of East Asian societies (encompassing Religion, Historical Studies, Literary Arts, Film, Economic Systems, and Global Development). A distinctive aspect of the curriculum is its emphasis on East Asia's philosophical heritage, explored through original writings and concepts within their historical and cultural frameworks. This approach stems from the recognition that as East Asia's economic influence expands worldwide, its intellectual traditions and cultural patterns will increasingly question established global norms and ways of thinking.
