The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences explores diverse research fields, from hydrogeochemistry to geophysical studies. Our comprehensive curriculum, extensive graduate offerings, and renowned faculty establish us as a leading Earth Science institution nationwide. The University of Waterloo's Earth and Environmental Science program has gained global recognition for its exceptional research contributions. Studies concentrate on analyzing geological and hydrogeological phenomena, characterizing contemporary and historical geological settings, and examining how these systems respond to anthropogenic impacts. Our department provides diverse programs specializing in Environmental Geology, with research encompassing geological process analysis, environmental interpretation across different time periods, human-induced system changes, and numerous related subjects. Key research specialties include: groundwater studies, contaminant transport modeling, chemical and isotopic analysis of water systems, mineral resource exploration, rock and mineral characterization, tectonic studies, geotechnical applications, geophysical investigations, depositional environment analysis, and Ice Age geology. Graduate students can pursue MSc and PhD degrees, with flexible options including thesis-based and coursework-focused Master's programs for professionals. Additionally, we provide specialized professional certifications for Earth Science graduates.
Through the Water Institute's Collaborative Water Program, students collaborate with multidisciplinary experts and industry partners. As Canada's most interdisciplinary water-focused graduate initiative, participants combine specialized Earth and Environmental Sciences training with cross-disciplinary collaboration across 11 academic departments. Successful graduates earn a distinctive 'Water' specialization designation on their degree credentials.
