Chemistry is a multifaceted field that touches every part of daily life – from what we observe and consume to what we experience through our senses. Waterloo's Chemistry programs, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, balance theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, equipping students for diverse and evolving career paths. Potential opportunities include investigating the causes of debilitating illnesses, creating medications to combat cancer, or evaluating ecological impacts. Chemical research spans numerous areas connected to life sciences, environmental studies, novel material creation, nanotechnology, and deepening our comprehension of the natural world. Waterloo's M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry provide access to cutting-edge research across key domains like analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer science, and theoretical chemistry. These programs equip graduates for rewarding careers in industry, government, and academic settings. Degree requirements include completing three graduate-level courses plus the M.Sc. seminar course, along with submitting and defending a thesis. At least half of graduate coursework must be completed within the Chemistry Department.

Research areas include: Energy storage material synthesis and characterization in solid state chemistry. Intermetallic compounds for PEM fuel cell catalysts. Solid state nitrite compounds. Materials for supercapacitors and pseudocapacitors. Lithium ion battery chemistry. Heavy atom radicals with combined magnetic and conductive properties. Advanced thermoelectric materials. Unconventional polyselenides and polytellurides. Bioinorganic synthesis techniques. Iron cluster chemistry inspired by nitrogenase. Divalent titanium reactivity studies. Organometallic monomer synthesis and self-assembly processes
