Management sciences is an expansive, multidisciplinary field focused on solving problems and making decisions within organizations. It blends analytical modeling with behavioral science approaches to tackle society's most challenging issues. Students gain expertise in supply chain operations and optimization techniques while also exploring advanced topics like human-computer interaction, sustainable energy solutions, and entrepreneurial innovation. The program features three primary specialization tracks, allowing both students and faculty to concentrate on the knowledge areas that align with their aspirations. We provide a dedicated management engineering bachelor's degree, plus a management sciences option for engineering undergraduates. Following Waterloo's distinctive approach, all students participate in cooperative education, completing up to six 4-month work placements alternating with academic terms. This hands-on experience strengthens classroom learning, creating a comprehensive educational foundation.
Information systems (IS) aims to develop future innovators in creating, implementing, and overseeing computer-based information solutions. The curriculum covers both fundamental principles and emerging developments in IS methodologies and applications. Those drawn to organizational dimensions can combine their studies with operations research and technology management courses. The program explores IS development through human-computer interaction studies, data analysis, information retrieval systems, and text processing technologies. Students may enhance their technical skills with complementary computer science electives. Graduates emerge prepared for diverse roles in tech firms, government agencies, or other institutions, with career paths including systems analysis, data science, IS leadership, and data architecture. Doctoral candidates receive training for academic or research-oriented professions.
