Geography is a multifaceted field that examines both natural and human-made environments across various scales, from local communities to the entire planet. From addressing climate change crises to exploring socioeconomic dynamics, assessing environmental transformations, or creating advanced mapping technologies, Geography connects the social sciences (human geography), geospatial technologies (geomatics), and earth sciences (physical geography) to develop sustainable answers to global challenges. If you seek a foundational discipline providing practical experience, analytical skill-building, and a holistic approach to modern environmental and sustainability issues, look no further. Our Department provides undergraduate programs (B.E.S.), a Master of Climate Change (M.C.C.), research-focused graduate degrees (M.E.S., M.A., M.Sc.), and a Ph.D. program.

The University of Waterloo's Department of Geography and Environmental Management ranks among the world's top 100 Geography departments and holds 5th place in Canada. With 35 faculty members specializing in diverse areas of human geography, physical geography, geomatics, and aviation, we foster academic excellence. At the graduate level, we partner with Wilfrid Laurier University's Geography and Environmental Studies department, forming the collaborative "Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography," which combines the strengths of both institutions. Students can pursue three thesis-based master's programs (MA, MES, MSc) or three course-based degrees (MA, MES, MCC). The program encourages interdisciplinary learning through connections with labs, research groups, and initiatives like the Collaborative Water Program. As part of Waterloo's innovative academic community, our Department provides an exceptional environment to advance your intellectual and professional aspirations.
