The Master of Development Practice (MDP) is a professional, course-based degree that equips graduates for careers as global development experts. This program trains students to tackle issues of extreme poverty and sustainable development through comprehensive coursework. Emphasizing sustainability, the MDP curriculum spans four interconnected disciplines: health sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, and management studies. Hands-on field placements form an essential part of the MDP experience, enabling students to acquire practical skills in the development field prior to graduation. Waterloo boasts an expanding network of partners ranging from local grassroots initiatives to global institutions. Additionally, Waterloo collaborates with 36 international universities and organizations via the Global Association of MDP programs, providing students with valuable networking connections, career resources, and research publication prospects. The MDP program typically takes 4-6 terms to complete, including a mandatory 3-month field placement or internship. During their final term, following their practical experience, students may attend and present at the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) in New York.
