The Department of Economics is dedicated to outstanding research and teaching. Our faculty explore diverse economic subjects and consistently publish in top-tier Economics journals. With 28 research-active professors, our department spans numerous specialties such as econometrics, development economics, economic theory, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, international trade, labor economics, law and economics, macroeconomics, and public finance. Faculty members regularly publish in leading economics publications and frequently secure research funding that benefits graduate students. Our undergraduate and graduate programs embody Waterloo Economics' three pillars: Academic Development, Practical Experience, and Career Preparation. The MA program develops crucial analytical and problem-solving abilities through coursework, research projects, and practical applications. The MA Co-op option enhances academic learning with an eight-month professional placement, often serving as a career launchpad. Our PhD program establishes rigorous training in economic theory and econometrics, preparing students to apply these methods across various economic fields.
