The Department of Psychology comprises 42 faculty members, distributed evenly across six primary research fields: Clinical, Cognitive, Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental, Industrial-Organizational, and Social. Our program serves more than 800 undergraduates working toward a Psychology Bachelor's degree and over 400 students completing a Psychology Minor. Supported by substantial funding from Canada's tri-council agencies—NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR—along with international grants, our department features cutting-edge laboratory equipment such as eye-tracking systems, ERP technology, and virtual reality facilities. Waterloo's Psychology Department consistently ranks among Canada's top five.
The Industrial-Organizational Psychology program aims to deliver comprehensive training that prepares students for diverse career opportunities while empowering them to create meaningful workplace improvements. Students engage with psychological theories and methodologies through coursework while gaining practical experience via research and consulting initiatives alongside faculty. Ultimately, we strive to cultivate skilled researchers and practitioners capable of influencing organizations, employees, and the broader I-O discipline.
Our I-O program provides two distinct degree pathways:
The two-year MASc program prepares students for careers in both private and public sectors, with roughly half of graduates entering professional roles.
Our PhD program primarily admits MASc graduates continuing their studies, though we also welcome students with external master's degrees, just as some of our MASc graduates pursue doctoral studies elsewhere.
