Management sciences is an expansive, interdisciplinary field focused on solving problems and improving decision-making within organizations. It blends analytical modeling with behavioral science approaches to tackle society's most challenging issues. Students gain expertise in supply chain operations and optimization techniques while also exploring emerging areas like human-computer interaction, sustainable energy solutions, and entrepreneurial innovation. The program features three primary specializations, allowing both students and faculty to concentrate on the competencies that align with their passions and career aspirations. Undergraduate options include a dedicated management engineering degree or a management sciences concentration for students in other engineering disciplines. Following Waterloo's distinctive approach, all undergraduates participate in co-op education, completing up to six 4-month work placements alternating with academic terms. This hands-on experience strengthens classroom learning, creating a comprehensive educational foundation. The University of Waterloo's Management Sciences Department delivers a multifaceted curriculum with research strengths in applied operations, information systems, and technology management. Its interdisciplinary structure fosters exceptional opportunities to develop expertise across analytical methods, optimization strategies, information systems, and behavioral science applications.
The applied operations research specialization equips students with quantitative methods to model complex decision-making scenarios in today's global manufacturing and service sectors. Faculty specialists bring deep knowledge in optimization techniques, stochastic processes, Markov models, data analytics, and decision analysis, with particular applications in healthcare systems, logistics networks, pricing strategies, energy management, and production systems.
