The Department of Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo is a hub for rigorous research, offering varied programs that explore critical societal challenges. Since 1960, we've provided undergraduate and graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in Sociology, and since 2009, an interdisciplinary Legal Studies program. Our department champions scholarly excellence through dynamic sociological and socio-legal inquiry while nurturing mentorship between students and faculty. With core strengths in social theory and research methods, our work focuses on key themes: Crime, Law, and Security; Knowledge, Education, and Digital Culture; Migration, Borders, and Transnationalism; and Social Inequality and Public Policy. Our research and teaching empower individuals to comprehend their societal roles, navigate complex social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Waterloo's Sociology Department fosters a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere where students develop sociological insights into contemporary global issues. Our MA and PhD programs deepen students' grasp of social dynamics through theoretical frameworks, methodological training, and interdisciplinary approaches, covering specialized fields like law and crime, inequality and policy, migration studies, governance, and cultural education.
