The University of Waterloo's Political Science PhD program stands out as Canada's most forward-thinking initiative in its field, providing exceptional adaptability in primary research pursuits. The curriculum includes structured career preparation for diverse professional trajectories, hands-on learning opportunities (such as participation in the nation's most extensive co-operative education system or alternative internship arrangements), and teaching-focused pathways (featuring guided instructional practice and official educator training). Candidates will collaborate with globally and domestically distinguished experts across three primary specializations: Canadian Government, Global Affairs, and Economic Policy Studies. For their complementary focus area, doctoral candidates can select either another primary specialization or design a personalized study track within an approved disciplinary domain (such as cross-national political systems, governance philosophy, policy analysis, or politics and gender studies) or a specialized segment of their main concentration (including security studies or civil liberties). The first academic year comprises required coursework, including a collaborative research methods class, two classes in the principal specialization, two classes in either a secondary specialization or tailored focus area, plus one optional course. Additionally, participants must attend the Professional Development Seminar series - a collection of intensive workshops organized by the Department alongside complementary sessions from university resources like the Writing Services Office, Career Development Center, and Instructional Excellence Institute. This professional training equips graduates for diverse employment sectors by refining capabilities in investigative techniques, public communication strategies, practical research applications, conference participation standards, and vocational preparation.
