Management sciences is an expansive, interdisciplinary field focused on solving problems and improving decision-making within organizations. It blends analytical modeling with behavioral science approaches to tackle society's most challenging issues. Our curriculum equips students with fundamental supply chain and optimization expertise while introducing them to pioneering research areas like human-computer interaction, sustainable energy solutions, and entrepreneurial innovation. With three primary specialization tracks, both students and faculty can tailor their academic journey to align with their passions and career aspirations. The department provides an undergraduate management engineering degree, plus a management sciences option for students in other engineering disciplines. Following Waterloo's distinctive approach, all undergraduates participate in cooperative education, completing up to six 4-month work placements alternating with academic terms. This hands-on experience enhances classroom learning, delivering a comprehensive, real-world education.

The Ph.D. program in Management Sciences caters to graduate students with deep research interests in the field. Doctoral candidates complete tailored coursework (adjusted for prior education), pass rigorous comprehensive examinations, and produce an original dissertation. Typically, this intensive program requires four to five years of dedicated full-time study to complete.
