The University of Waterloo's Department of French Studies provides diverse undergraduate programs (including French Teaching Specialization, Honours, Arts and Business French, Minors, and Certificates) along with graduate programs (M.A. and Ph.D.). For those seeking to immerse themselves in French language and culture, our department presents an ideal academic pathway. We deliver degree programs spanning Bachelor of Arts, Masters, and PhD levels, supported by research-focused faculty and a welcoming community that equips students for careers in education, tourism, government, and business sectors. Additionally, we provide language enhancement courses for students aiming to strengthen their French proficiency. Comprehensive course listings and program details can be found on our website. Our PhD program in French Studies spans four years and focuses on three key research areas addressing contemporary developments in French studies and evolving workforce demands: digital archiving and electronic publishing, literature of the Ancien Régime and its theoretical frameworks, and Francophone cultural and literary studies (19th-21st centuries).
The Francophone studies component examines cultural and literary works from French-speaking regions worldwide (including France, Quebec, French Ontario, Africa, and the Caribbean) from the 1800s to today. This research area not only analyzes the historical contexts of artistic creation and distribution but also fosters interdisciplinary connections across various art forms - from literature and theater to cinema, music, and visual arts. Our theoretical framework incorporates multiple disciplines, drawing from semiotics, intermedial studies, feminist and queer theory, poststructuralism, postcolonial perspectives, ecocriticism, psychoanalytic theory, and minority studies.
