Our PhD program provides students with a robust grounding in economic theory and econometrics, along with diverse application areas. Students receive specialized training in public policy, labor economics, macroeconomics, monetary economics, econometrics, natural resources, and environmental and health economics. We foster an open-door culture designed to actively involve and inspire graduate students in their research pursuits. PhD candidates receive funding for up to 12 terms on campus, with opportunities to serve as research or teaching assistants. A select number of course instructor roles are available for those looking to enhance their teaching abilities. The Department of Economics prioritizes excellence in both research and education, with faculty publishing in top-tier economics journals. Our programs address current real-world challenges while providing modern analytical training. The integration of co-op experiences with academic study contributes to our students' exceptional achievements.

The Collaborative Water Program cultivates interdisciplinary approaches to water-related issues. This distinctive initiative enables students to pursue their economics specialization while collaborating with peers from various disciplines through core interdisciplinary courses. Offered jointly by 11 departments across all six University of Waterloo faculties, this program is coordinated by the Water Institute. Participants gain expertise in tackling complex water challenges through interdisciplinary teamwork, emerging as future water sector leaders capable of cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration.
