The Earth and Environmental Sciences program integrates geological studies with investigations of surface and groundwater systems, along with analyzing the engineering characteristics of rocks and soils. Discover more about our globally acclaimed research, from assisting communities in safeguarding water supplies to unraveling the secrets of Earth's deep geological phenomena. Our department provides diverse programs centered on Environmental Geology, conducting studies on geological and hydrogeological processes, analyzing both current and historical geological settings, examining how these systems react to human impact, and exploring numerous related subjects. Through the Collaborative Water Program, organized by the Water Institute, students collaborate with specialists from multiple disciplines and industries. As Canada's most interdisciplinary water-focused graduate program, participants gain specialized knowledge in Earth and Environmental Sciences while working alongside peers from 11 different academic departments. Graduates earn a distinctive 'Water' specialization designation on their degree.

Qualification Requirements

The program is open to students who have completed a Master of Science (MSc) degree with a 75% average and who have outstanding academic credentials and a demonstrated ability to do original scholarly work. A normal requirement is a background in geology or geological engineering, but other experience relevant to a candidate's research interests will be considered. Candidates will be evaluated on an individual basis. University regulations permit that under exceptional circumstances, outstanding students with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, can be admitted directly into the PhD program. Before applying to the program, students are strongly advised to establish contact with potential supervisors. It is a good strategy to identify whether the potential supervisors that students would like to undertake research with have available positions and funding. Three academic references Proof of English language proficiency, if applicable. TOEFL 90 (writing 25, speaking 25), IELTS 7.0 (writing 6.5, speaking 6.5)
