The Biology Department provides thesis-focused graduate education for both M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees. Students in these programs must complete coursework, typically chosen from Biology Department offerings, though courses from other university departments or institutions may count with advisory committee approval. A minimum of two courses must be selected from Biology Department listings. All graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module - an online requirement to be finished within the initial 8 weeks of the first term, which appears on transcripts. The Integrity Office will notify students about this module, distinct from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
The department also maintains a longstanding expertise in Microbiology, particularly in environmental bioremediation applications and research on microbial communities (metagenomics) and populations (Rhizobiales, extremophile physiology).
