The department offers vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, with around 30 students earning BMath Honours degrees annually in Applied Mathematics or Mathematical Physics. Apply mathematical principles to tackle challenging issues across various fields including engineering, healthcare, finance, and scientific research—from analyzing ocean wave patterns to exploring the fabric of the universe. The Applied Mathematics program strengthens your grasp of calculus and differential equations, which form the basis of most mathematical models. You'll gain ample hands-on experience applying these techniques to practical scenarios—both in academic settings and through optional co-op placements. Alumni often find careers in research, development, and consulting, while others continue their education in applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, or physics. A Waterloo degree provides excellent career prospects in either path.
