Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies (SMF) is an interdisciplinary field that explores the connections between human relationships, intimate partnerships, and family structures through academic, research, and practical lenses. Grounded in principles of social equity and inclusive practices, SMF fosters thoughtful, analytical conversations about matters affecting all members of society. This program especially benefits individuals pursuing or engaged in human service professions like healthcare, counseling, therapy, or education. Students can select from various academic paths, including a four-year general major, honours programs (with co-op or traditional options), combined honours majors, or a minor. The program also offers a specialized diploma for those seeking concentrated study without pursuing a full degree or for degree holders expanding their expertise.
As Canada's unique program of its kind, SMF delves deeper than fundamental biological aspects of sexuality. It employs multiple viewpoints to investigate relationship dynamics, family communication, parenting approaches, media influences on gender perceptions, cultural impacts on sexual norms, and other topics—all examined through a justice-oriented framework. The program cultivates a welcoming, community-oriented atmosphere at St. Jerome's University, one of Waterloo's affiliated colleges, featuring intimate class sizes. Graduates with this Waterloo degree can pursue diverse meaningful careers in education, counseling, social work, community development, and related fields, with early professional exposure available through co-op opportunities.
