For centuries, philosophy has formed a cornerstone of liberal arts education—and rightfully so. No other field cultivates critical thinking skills quite like it. Philosophy also serves as a perfect complement to mathematics and scientific studies. Waterloo's Philosophy program invites you to examine timeless human questions, master formal logic principles, and use philosophical frameworks to analyze pressing contemporary issues. You'll even get to put theory into practice through co-op experiences. After graduation, diverse career paths await. Philosophy provides exceptional preparation for legal professions and equips you with transferable skills for any field requiring broad perspective, attentive reading, rigorous evaluation, and persuasive communication. The undergraduate curriculum covers all major philosophical traditions while focusing on key specialties—including linguistics, logic and metaphysics, philosophy of mind and cognitive science, ethics and political theory, plus philosophy of science and mathematics.
