The Honours Studio Practice program equips students with essential creative and analytical abilities for careers in the arts through hands-on learning in a university setting. First-year students begin with foundational courses FINE 100 (Studio Fundamentals) and FINEVCULT 101 (Art History and Visual Culture). During their second year, students select four or more specialized studio courses from over 20 options covering diverse media like drawing, painting, digital arts, printmaking, sound, sculpture, photography, performance, installation, and wearable media. Third year emphasizes refining technical expertise while cultivating independent artistic projects. The culminating fourth year involves developing a unified portfolio for display in the Honours Graduation Exhibition each March. Studio work is complemented by studies in modern/contemporary art, visual culture, and interdisciplinary courses. Professional skills like artwork documentation, exhibition installation, statement writing, and catalog preparation form key aspects of the final year's studio course.
Fine Arts students pursuing the Studio Practice Honours can also opt for the Teaching Preparation Specialization. This track incorporates Psychology and Sociology coursework along with classroom experience, providing valuable training for future arts educators.
