The Honours Studio Practice program equips students for careers in the creative arts by developing both practical and analytical abilities within an academic setting. First-year students begin with foundational courses FINE 100 (Studio Fundamentals) and FINEVCULT 101 (Art History and Visual Culture). During their second year, students select four or more studio courses from over 20 specialized options covering various media like drawing, painting, digital arts, printmaking, sound, sculpture, photography, performance, installation, and wearable media. The third year emphasizes refining technical expertise while cultivating independent artistic projects. In their final year, students concentrate on producing a unified collection of work for display in the Honours Graduation Exhibition each March. Studio coursework and individual practice are complemented by studies in modern/contemporary art, visual culture, and interdisciplinary subjects. Professional skills like artwork documentation, exhibition installation, artist statement writing, and catalog preparation form key aspects of the fourth-year studio course.
Students pursuing the Honours Fine Arts - Studio Practice major can also opt for the Digital Art Specialization, which combines Fine Arts and Computer Science coursework.
